The processes involved are to the Fine Art Trade Guild Commended Level so ideal for anyone wanting to frame professionally – a suitable introduction if you wish to study for the Guild Certified Framer exam.

What Experience Do I Need?

Previous frame making experience is essential, as you will be using these skills to further your frame-making repertoire.

You will maximise the training potential if you are already familiar with specialist tools used in basic framing, able to cut mitres in mouldings, know how to form and fix a frame and how to plan, mark out and cut mounts. Our Basics of Framing and Mount Cutting and Decoration workshops will bring you up to speed.

Course Contents

This is a one day course from 10am – 5pm.

Class sizes are a maximum of 10 and we will supply each student with tools and materials to work with at their own work station.

On this day you will learn how to identify styles of art and the best method for attachment before trying 3 support and mount methods. These will help inform your framing project. You will find out about conservation principles required when age and style of artwork is a factor for consideration and how to prepare your artwork.

You will create a sink mount to create space for your artwork before making a frame with attachments ready to hang.

What Do I Need to Bring?

We provide tea and coffee, a certificate of achievement and a full training manual. You need to choose an item of fabric from home for framing and don’t forget a packed lunch!

You are invited to bring your own fabric-based art of around A4 size. This could be a sample of printed fabric possibly with a feature design. Shops that sell material for upholstery and home furnishing will often have special offer off-cuts available.
